Dentists on the Big Screen – Counting Down 7 Memorable Movie Dentists

March 2nd, 2015
Dentists on Screen

Dentists get a bad rap—and with their history in cinema, it’s easy to see why. Here are 7 noteworthy dentists on film that hold a special place on our watch lists.

1. Dr. Christian SzellMarathon Man (1976)

This intimidating Nazi dentist, played by Lauren Olivier, has gone down in cinema history as one of the most terrifying dentists to ever hit the screen. As the movie’s main antagonist, Szell is pitted against running enthusiast “Babe” (played by Dustin Hoffman) as they scramble to obtain a valuable set of diamonds. His (in)famous torture scene with Hoffman has drilled the line, “Is it safe?” into the minds of moviegoers and dental phobics alike!

2. Dr. Orin ScrivelloLittle Shop of Horrors (1986)

Steve Martin, as Dr. Scrivello, is a self-proclaimed sadistic dentist and abusive boyfriend to the main female lead, Audrey. Fortunately enough, after his evil ways are revealed, he meets his grisly demise after being fed to the notorious, giant, man-eating plant of the movie.

3. Dr. Philip ShermanFinding Nemo (2003)

The resident dentist of “42 Wallaby Way, Sydney”, this Australian dentist is quite the contrast to the ones mentioned previously. Dr. Sherman is actually quite a pleasant dentist! Although he may have been unaware of what happens to all the pet fish he gives to niece, at least he doesn’t scare the living daylights out of us!

4. Dr. David & Dr. Dana Hurst The Secret Lives of Dentists (2002)

Campbell Scott and Hope Davis star in this rather dramatic take on dentistry, as a married couple who share a dental practice. Things seem to be going alright for two, but then things are turned upside down when David catches his wife with another man.

5. Dr. Nicholas “Oz” Oseransky The Whole Nine Yards (2000)

Dr. Oz, a Montreal dentist, finds himself stuck between a rock and a hard place; with an overwhelming amount of debt on his shoulders and an unsupportive wife, it seems like he’s at his wits end. However, after discovering that his current neighbor, nicknamed “Tulip”, is a former mafia hitman, he finds himself on a quest to reveal Tulip’s location to his former mob boss, hoping to receive a reward in return.

6. Dr. Bertram Pincus Ghost Town (2008)

Having a dentist talk to you while your mouth is full of fingers and tools is one thing, but talking to someone who isn’t even there? In this comedy Ricky Gervais plays a dentist who can see ghosts and learns a few lessons on the way.

7. The Dentist The Carol Burnett Show (1969)

For our last entry in this list, we’ll keep it short with the hilariously classic skit from American comedian Tim Conway, The Dentist!

Now go an have a movie night with your staff!
