IDS in the Community – Dreams Take Flight – Creating Magical Memories for Special Kids

November 7th, 2013

IDS is passionate about helping children by making a visit to the dentist a little less stressful and a lot more fun. Our enthusiasm for helping children, however, doesn’t stop at the dentist’s office. Many members of the IDS Team are personally involved in charities aimed at helping children in need.

This October our Pre-Production Manager, April Gilbert, took a very special trip with the children’s charity Dreams Take Flight.

Hear from April what make Dreams Take Flight so important to her.

“I am the Pre-Production Manager at IDS and I love that everyday I can be part of a team that is focused on designing and building theming elements for children. At IDS it is part of our core values to focus on community. I have been involved with many charities in the past so I decided to take on a new opportunity and volunteer my time with the children’s charity Dreams Take Flight. This is a national non-profit organization that raises money throughout the year to provide the trip of a lifetime to children experiencing medical, intellectual, physical, social or emotional challenges. And where is the best place a that child could go… Disneyland of course!

The money that is raised is used to pay for all the expenses of the children (admission to the park, spending money, souvenirs, gifts and clothing). Air Canada, for whom my husband works, donates a Boeing 767 for the day to fly the children, medical team, and volunteers to Disney. Over the past 20 years Dreams Take Flight Calgary has taken 2845 children on this adventure.

This trip was a life changing experience for me. To see the enormous struggles and trials some of these kids go through on a daily basis is a really hard thing to wrap your head around. To know what these kids have gone through but to still see them laughing and having the time of their life in Disneyland is an amazing feeling. Even if it is for just one day, these kids are on a fantastic adventure where they can connect with other children that may have similar circumstances and experiences. I witnessed so many of the kids form instant bonds with one another.

This charity enabled 138 deserving children to enjoy a day where they could forget about their struggles and just be kids. I am so happy that I was lucky enough to share this day with so many amazing people and I look forward to participating for many years to come.”
